Ashton Hills
Cool-climate Australia sounds like somewhat of an oxymoron, but the widely acclaimed Pinot Noirs from Ashton Hills have spent the last 40 years proving otherwise.
Stephen George, regional pioneer and founder of Ashton Hills, recognised the potential of the undulating hills and winding valleys with their wide array of high altitudes and aspects to be home to some of the most elegantly styled and pure of fruit Pinot Noirs in the world.
The goldilocks of the wine world, Pinot Noir is notoriously difficult to please. Stephen has experimented with up to 25 different clones, ultimately settling on five which continue to produce wines which express the beauty of their surroundings through their lifted perfumes and refined structure, gaining somewhat of a cult following at home and on the international stage.
In 2015, Stephen transferred his stake in Ashton Hills to Wirra Wirra Vineyards, but continues to work closely at vintage with the winemaking team to continue the tradition of producing exceptional wines from the Ashton Hills site.
