Vilarnau receives the Wineries for Climate Protection certificate

Published on

The Spanish Wine Federation (FEV) has awarded Vilarnau the Wineries for Climate Protection certificate (WfCP), which promotes continuous sustainability improvement at wineries. This certificate recognizes the commitment to sustainable development and the fight against climate change at Vilarnau, the first Sant Sadurní d'Anoia-based winery to receive it and one of the first 14 wineries in Spain.

The implementation of a series of sustainable measures at Vilarnau has been decisive in obtaining the "Wineries for Climate Protection" certificate. The most remarkable measures in this respect have been the calculation of the carbon footprint –which led to a plan to reduce emissions to the atmosphere, the installation of a biomass boiler –which enabled the elimination of fossil fuel consumption (25,000 litres of diesel a year); the monitoring of electrical energy use –which has allowed to control every form of consumption at the facilities as well as the implementation of reduction measures; the transformation of traditional vineyards into ecological vineyards and the recycling and recovery of waste. These actions have been accompanied by water saving actions based on the reuse of rainwater collected at a lake just next to the winery.

To obtain this certificate, Vilarnau had to pass an external audit process conducted by Lloyd's Register, one of the certification bodies authorised by the FEV. This audit certifies the winery’s commitment to continuous improvement and reduction in the four areas of action required by the relevant standard: reduction of greenhouse gases (GHG) emissions, water management, waste reduction and energy efficiency and renewable energies.

The certificate reflects, in a specific and measurable manner, Vilarnau’s efforts for sustainable development. Under this approach, Vilarnau has been implementing –since its very beginnings– environmentally friendly measures in order to produce its long-aging cava wines with the least possible impact on the environment.
