Today, at 3:00 am., wineries Viñas del Vero has initiated its 2016 vintage at its Salas Bajas vineyards as far as the Chardonnay variety is concerned, and at estate "Las Almunietas" to collect delicate Pinot Noir.
Both varieties are short-cycle grapes, chosen to start the vintage as they are the first ones to reach the peak of ripeness. Currently, Chardonnay is the most widespread white grape variety in the Somontano region, while Pinot Noir is an extremely fragile red grape, very sensitive to weather conditions, thus being of very limited production in the Somontano Designation of Origin.
José Ferrer, Top Winemaker and Technical Director of Viñas del Vero, announced that "a quantitatively short vintage is expected due to this year’s weather conditions, but one of exceptional quality."
This way, Viñas del Vero enters a period of activity that will last until early October, the moment for the old grenache grapes at the Secastilla Valley to start being collected.
