Viñas del Vero has won the ‘Agro-food’ category of the Germana de Foix Awards. Granted by the Barbastro City Council’s Development department, these prizes recognise work done by local businesses and organisations that helps promote the city and further its development. A number of factors led the jury to select Viñas del Vero as a winner, including its exclusive use of grapes grown within the D.O., which encourages growers to continue growing in the area; the fact that the winery has created 60 direct jobs and its encouragement of good viticulture practice and environmental sustainability.
The accolade is a reward for Viñas del Vero’s progress and for its commitment to the social aspect of creating and developing the Somontano brand that it has shown since its inception. This commitment has taken the form of unconditional support for a great many initiatives that have been launched in the city of Barbastro and the region’s townships.
Since it was founded in 1986, Somontano’s foremost winery has been working on creating and preserving a value chain in the production of its wines. This way of thinking ensures a sustainable balance from the growing of the grapes right through to the end consumer, the aim being for the business to deliver benefits for the environment both locally and globally. Viñas del Vero is also the first winery in Aragón to be “Wineries for Climate Protection” certified, look after the biodiversity that exists in the surrounding area, hold organic production certificates, revive and continue to grow grape varieties indigenous to Somontano and apply measures to reduce water consumption and emissions that pollute the air, seeking to avoid contributing to the greenhouse effect.
